Michael Alan Jones, aged 67, passed away peacefully at his home in Toano, Virginia, on November 22, 2025, after a brave battle with cancer. His family described him as a “jack of all trades” who found joy in various pursuits, particularly music. He is remembered not only for his passions but also for the deep affection he held for his family.
Born to David F. Jones and Janet A. Higgs, Michael was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents, Thomas and Hortense Higgs, and David and Cecil Jones. He is survived by his devoted mother, Janet A. Higgs of Toano, his brother David T. Jones of Roanoke, and his sister Robin A. Jones of Saluda. His legacy continues through his children: Jennifer (Alexander) Roahrig, Michelle (Douglas) Shepeluk, Jessica (Aaron) Goetz, and Michael “T.J.” Jones, all of Virginia.
Michael proudly embraced his role as a grandfather to Nevaeh (Thomas) Johnson, Braden Cooper, Angelina “Angel” Cooper, Scarlett Roahrig, Dawson Goetz, and Gregg “Dean” Roahrig. He also cherished his great-granddaughter, Paisley Rayne Johnson.
A Life of Meaningful Connections
Friends and family described Michael as a man of profound connections. His best friend, Ray Dise, stood by him through life’s challenges, exemplifying the strong bonds he fostered throughout his life. His warmth and kindness touched many lives, earning him a lasting place in the hearts of those who knew him.
In his final days, Michael received compassionate care from the VCU Oncology Department and the dedicated nurses at Riverside Hospice in Williamsburg, Virginia. His family expressed heartfelt gratitude for their support, which made his transition more bearable.
