Pentagon Investigates Senator Kelly for Urging Troops to Disobey Orders

The Defense Department has initiated an investigation into Senator Mark Kelly following the release of a video in which he and other Democratic lawmakers advised servicemembers to disregard illegal orders. The inquiry could potentially lead to Kelly being recalled to active military service for court-martial proceedings. This announcement was made on Monday, reflecting the gravity of the situation.

In the video shared last week, Kelly and five fellow Democrats, including a retired CIA officer and four former military personnel, expressed their concerns regarding the legality of potential military actions in the Caribbean and the possibility of troop deployments within the United States. While the video did not target any specific issue, it served as a reminder that military personnel have the right to defy unlawful orders.

The investigation follows a tumultuous weekend during which President Donald Trump criticized the six lawmakers, labeling their behavior as “seditious.” In response to the escalating tensions, the Pentagon announced that a thorough review of the allegations against Kelly would be conducted. The Defense Department stated, “In accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice … and other applicable regulations, a thorough review of these allegations has been initiated to determine further actions, which may include recall to active duty for court-martial proceedings or administrative measures.”

The Department of Defense referenced a specific section of the United States Code that prohibits interference with the “loyalty, morale, or discipline” of the military. Violating this law can result in a penalty of up to 10 years in prison.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly condemned the actions of the lawmakers in the video, dubbing them the “Seditious Six” in a post on social media. He characterized their message as “despicable, reckless, and false,” emphasizing that encouraging servicemembers to disregard orders undermines military discipline. Hegseth noted that only Kelly is under investigation due to his active status, while the other participants are no longer subject to military law.

Hegseth expressed particular concern regarding Kelly’s statements, which were directed at troops while invoking his military rank and experience. He asserted that such conduct brings discredit to the armed forces.

Responding to the investigation, Kelly stated he learned about it through Hegseth’s social media announcement. He expressed defiance, indicating that attempts to intimidate him or other legislators would be ineffective. “If this is meant to intimidate me and other members of Congress from doing our jobs and holding this administration accountable, it won’t work,” Kelly wrote. He emphasized his commitment to the country, asserting that he would not be silenced by those seeking to protect their own power over the Constitution.

The situation continues to unfold as the Defense Department’s investigation progresses, raising significant questions about the balance between military authority and political expression.
