UPDATE: In a commanding performance, Yaxel Lendeborg propelled the Michigan Wolverines to an 86-61 victory over Middle Tennessee on November 15, 2023, marking their fourth straight win and improving their record to 4-0. Lendeborg, who scored a game-high 25 points, is eager to assert himself as a key player and not just a role player.
After reflecting on his performance in earlier games, Lendeborg stated, “I didn’t come here to be a role player. I came here to be the man.” He demonstrated this mindset by scoring 18 points in the second half, showcasing his potential to lead the team. “I feel like today I took a step in that direction,” Lendeborg added.
Throughout the game, Lendeborg was efficient, making all seven shots inside the arc and converting all five free throws. He also contributed significantly on defense with 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Coach Dusty May praised Lendeborg’s performance, noting that “every time we ran something for him, something good happened.”
Michigan faced a tough challenge, trailing at halftime 36-30. However, Lendeborg and his teammates flipped the script in the second half, adopting an aggressive strategy to overwhelm their opponents. “We went out there and punched them in the face first,” he said, reflecting the team’s newfound intensity.
This performance comes after Lendeborg struggled with being too passive in earlier games, something he recognized needed to change. He expressed a desire to be more assertive moving forward, indicating his determination to evolve into a more dominant player in the Wolverines’ lineup.
Lendeborg, who transferred from UAB, noted that he initially expected a significant adjustment period playing at Michigan. However, he quickly adapted, showcasing his skills against opponents from the ACC and Big 12. Fellow teammate L.J. Cason echoed Lendeborg’s sentiments, stating, “We definitely need him to take that role of being what he is … to be the best player on the court at all times.”
As Michigan continues to explore different lineup combinations, May revealed they are still searching for the right rhythm. With nine players seeing at least 15 minutes of play against Middle Tennessee, the Wolverines are committed to finding the optimal blend of talent and strategy.
Looking ahead, Michigan’s next challenge will test their depth and cohesion as they prepare for upcoming matchups. The team is focused on building upon this victory and ensuring that Lendeborg continues to embrace his role as a leader.
With Lendeborg’s determination and skill, Michigan fans have much to look forward to as the season progresses. The Wolverines aim to maintain their momentum and solidify their standing as a formidable contender in college basketball.
