UPDATE: A beloved cat was discovered dead at a recycling center, prompting an urgent appeal from a local charity for information to help his grieving owners. On November 13, staff at the Household Recycling Centre on Brunel Drive, Newark, alerted Beauty’s Legacy after noticing suspicious behavior from a visitor. They found Murphy, a black cat with a blue collar, in a black bag in the soft furnishings skip.
Volunteers responded at 12:30 PM and identified Murphy through a microchip scan. The charity reports that he likely died between 8:30 AM and mid-morning on the same day. “It was clear he had a home,” said Lisa Dean, chief executive of Beauty’s Legacy. “We just need to know what happened for the owner’s peace of mind. They’re devastated and want closure.”
In a bid to uncover the circumstances surrounding Murphy’s death, Beauty’s Legacy is calling on residents in the Gardiner Avenue, Goldstraw Lane, Pond Lane, and Johnsons Road areas of Fernwood to review any CCTV or doorbell camera footage they may have. “It’s shocking and very, very sad,” Dean added.
Beauty’s Legacy aims to educate the public about what to do if they encounter a deceased cat or if they accidentally hit one while driving. Currently, there is no legal requirement to report a cat accident, unlike with dogs and livestock, but the charity stresses the importance of doing so for the sake of grieving pet owners.
“The trauma for the owners has been agonizing, and it was also very upsetting for the staff at the recycling center,” Dean explained. She emphasized that deceased or injured cats can be taken to any veterinarian, free of charge, to be scanned for microchips. This process allows owners to be contacted to arrange treatment or to say goodbye.
Beauty’s Legacy is urging anyone with information to call them at 07866 026343. The charity hopes that by raising awareness, they can prevent similar tragedies in the future. “It’s really resonated with people who are missing pets, who worry this same thing has happened to their animals,” Dean concluded.
The community is rallying to find answers for Murphy’s owners during this heartbreaking time. Please share widely to help bring closure to this devastating situation.
