On November 1, 2023, Melania Trump and Usha Vance embarked on their first official trip together, visiting military families in North Carolina as the holiday season approaches. The wives of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance were set to meet with Marines and their families at Camp Lejeune, the largest Marine Corps base on the East Coast, along with the Marine Corps Air Station New River.
The day’s schedule included joint appearances with military-connected students and remarks from both women addressing service members and their loved ones. According to the president’s office, Melania Trump’s prepared comments were expected to commend the Marine Corps on its 250 years of service while offering gratitude to Marines and their families, particularly during a time that often brings challenges for those separated by deployment.
Focus on Technology and Community
In addition to honoring military service, Melania Trump was also set to touch on the evolving landscape of new technologies, including artificial intelligence. This focus aligns with her ongoing efforts to engage with contemporary issues affecting families and children.
The visit followed a significant evening where both women attended the first formal White House dinner of Trump’s second administration. This black-tie event, organized by the first lady, honored Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Throughout the year, Melania Trump and Usha Vance have made several appearances together. They participated in the inauguration in January and attended a White House celebration for military mothers. In May, they were present at a luncheon for Senate spouses. Their collaborative efforts also included attending the opening night of “Les Misérables” at the Kennedy Center in June and supporting the president as he signed an executive order aimed at assisting foster children, a key aspect of Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative under her Be Best program.
Community Engagement and Initiatives
Melania Trump has consistently centered her work on children’s well-being. The Be Best program, launched during her husband’s first term, addresses issues of children’s welfare, online safety, and opioid abuse. Notably, in October 2023, she announced the successful reunification of eight children displaced by the Russia-Ukraine war with their families, following discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Earlier in 2023, Melania Trump advocated for federal legislation that imposes penalties for online sexual exploitation targeting minors, which President Trump signed into law in May.
Usha Vance, a former lawyer, is also defining her role as second lady. She recently initiated a “Summer Reading Challenge” aimed at encouraging students from kindergarten through eighth grade to read twelve books during their summer break. Participants can earn certificates and prizes upon completion. Usha Vance frequently accompanies the vice president on official travels, often bringing their three young children.
This collaborative trip to North Carolina marks another step in the growing partnership between Melania Trump and Usha Vance, as they work together to support military families and advocate for children’s issues across the nation.
