Celebrated Tony-Winning Actress Elizabeth Franz Passes Away at 84

Elizabeth Franz, the acclaimed Tony Award-winning actress known for her memorable role as Linda Loman in Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,” has died at the age of 84. According to her husband, screenwriter Christopher Pelham, she passed away on November 4, 2023, at their home in Woodbury, Connecticut, after a prolonged battle with cancer and complications from treatment.

Born Elizabeth Jean Frankovitch on June 18, 1941, in Akron, Ohio, Franz began her journey in the performing arts at the Weathervane Playhouse in her hometown. Her passion for theater led her to New York City, where she made her Broadway debut in 1967 in Tom Stoppard’s “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.” This marked the beginning of a remarkable five-decade career that encompassed stage, television, and film.

Career Highlights and Acclaimed Performances

Franz’s portrayal of Linda Loman in the 50th-anniversary revival of “Death of a Salesman” earned her a Tony Award in 1999. This performance not only solidified her status as a leading actress but also led to her reprising the role in a Showtime adaptation, for which she received an Emmy nomination.

Her talent was not confined to a single performance; she earned additional Tony nominations for her roles in “Brighton Beach Memoirs” in 1983 and “Morning’s at Seven” in 2002. Furthermore, she was honored with an Obie Award for her work in Christopher Durang’s “Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You.”

Beyond the stage, Franz’s impressive filmography includes roles in “Sabrina,” “School Ties,” and “Christmas with the Kranks.” Her television appearances were equally notable, featuring guest spots on popular series such as “Gilmore Girls,” “Law & Order: SVU,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”
