Israeli Government to Debate Inquiry into October 7 Attacks

The Israeli government is set to discuss the establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the handling of the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas. This meeting, scheduled for October 8, follows a directive from the High Court of Justice, which mandated that the government address this critical issue. The October Council, representing hundreds of families affected by the attacks, has insisted that any outcome other than a full inquiry would represent a “war on the future of the State of Israel.”

During the upcoming Sunday meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will face pressure to support an independent investigation into the massacre. This comes after he expressed his opposition to the current method of forming a state commission during a recent Knesset session. A state commission would involve an independent probe led by members appointed by the Supreme Court, ensuring impartiality in the investigation.

The October Council has voiced strong objections to any alternative proposals by Netanyahu. They have warned that creating a committee appointed by the government would be a “direct affront” to the bereaved families, soldiers, and citizens of Israel. In a statement, the Council asserted, “Any attempt to bypass the law with a government-appointed committee, a committee whose purpose is to whitewash rather than investigate, is unacceptable.”

The Council further emphasized the need for a genuine inquiry, stating, “The prime minister’s announcement about forming an alternative committee is not a solution but a transparent attempt to evade the truth. We will not allow it.” They made it clear that if the government attempts to avoid a legitimate investigation, they will pursue every avenue to ensure that a full, independent, and lawful inquiry is established.

Public sentiment appears to support the call for an inquiry, with numerous polls indicating widespread backing for such an investigation. Despite this, the political leadership has repeatedly stalled discussions surrounding the events of October 7. Families of the victims have been particularly vocal, demanding accountability and transparency in the government’s response to the attacks.

The upcoming meeting is poised to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing discussion about accountability and transparency within the Israeli government. As the situation unfolds, the October Council and the bereaved families are prepared to make their voices heard in the pursuit of justice for those affected by the tragic events of October 7.
