In a recent interview, actor George Clooney revealed the emotional impact of a past audition for the film Bram Stoker’s Dracula directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Clooney, who auditioned for a role in the 1992 film adaptation of the classic novel, shared that Coppola’s response to his performance left him feeling hurt.
Clooney’s Unforgettable Audition
While attending the premiere of a new film at Jay Kelly’s red carpet event, Clooney reflected on his experience auditioning for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He recalled, “I had a terrible audition for — and this will make you laugh — Francis Ford Coppola.” Despite his belief that he delivered a strong performance, he later learned from his agent that Coppola perceived him as “drunk” during the audition. Clooney clarified, “Which I was not, but that cuts,” expressing how much the comment affected him emotionally.
The actor noted that he had taken Percodan before the audition, contributing to his relaxed demeanor. Ultimately, Clooney did not secure a role in the film, which featured a star-studded cast including Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves, Cary Elwes, Richard E. Grant, and Sadie Frost.
A Lasting Impression
Clooney had previously discussed his audition experience in 2016, revealing that he had taken a method-acting approach, intentionally becoming intoxicated to portray a character who was meant to be drunk. Despite his efforts, he did not land the part.
Bram Stoker’s Dracula achieved significant commercial success, grossing approximately $215.8 million worldwide against a production budget of $40 million. The film was also recognized during the Academy Awards, receiving nominations in four categories, including Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Makeup, and Best Art Direction, winning in the first three categories.
