Discover Minnesota’s Music Scene Through Recipes in New Cookbook

The new cookbook, A Musicians Menu, offers an intimate glimpse into the vibrant music culture of Minnesota through the culinary creations of local artists. Compiled by Edie Baumgart, president of Minneapolis-based RaeBeat Records, the book features over 50 recipes from musicians, stagehands, and others deeply rooted in the Twin Cities music scene.

Baumgart describes the project as a “recipe book” rather than a traditional cookbook, comparing it to collections of recipes shared within a community, like those found in church cookbooks. She candidly acknowledges that she cannot guarantee the success of every recipe but emphasizes that they provide insight into the personalities behind the city’s rich musical landscape.

Exploring Personal Stories Through Food

In an interview, Baumgart reflected on her connection to music and cooking, noting how music has significantly shaped her life. “I was working a really intense corporate job. I’d go into work every morning, and I’d be on the express bus, and I’d be crying,” she shared. After leaving her corporate role in 2009 to focus on music, she found solace and purpose in her creative pursuits.

The inspiration for A Musicians Menu stemmed from Baumgart’s desire to bridge the gap between the culinary and music communities. She observed that while music fans and musicians frequently gather, individuals from the food industry are often absent. To remedy this, she sought contributions that would reflect the unique personalities of each artist. For example, Jon Clifford, known as the “Mayor of Minneapolis Music,” shared his distinctive recipe for meatloaf cupcakes—an embodiment of his character.

Baumgart envisions the book appealing to music lovers and food enthusiasts alike. “It is a Minnesota book,” she stated, acknowledging that its regional focus may intrigue those outside the state as well. The recipes serve as a testament to the creativity within the local scene, showcasing that cooking and music are intertwined forms of artistic expression.

Cooking with a Purpose

The release of A Musicians Menu is not just about recipes; a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Diverse Emerging Music Organization (DEMO), which supports underrepresented artists in the music industry. This initiative underscores Baumgart’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and diverse music community.

The book’s structure is divided into sections such as Opening Acts (appetizers, salads, breakfasts), Headliners (main dishes), and After Party (desserts). This organization mirrors the flow of a live music event, inviting readers to experience a culinary concert in their own kitchens.

For those interested in acquiring a copy, A Musicians Menu retails for $39.99 and can be purchased online or at select local events. Notably, Baumgart will be present for book signings at Hi-Fi Hair and Records on November 22 and at the Lyric Center for the Arts in Virginia, Minnesota, on November 26.

The intersection of food and music in A Musicians Menu offers a unique opportunity to celebrate Minnesota’s rich cultural heritage while connecting with the stories of those who contribute to its vibrant soundscape. Baumgart’s passion for the local scene shines through, making this book a compelling read for anyone interested in the artistic spirit of the Twin Cities.
