A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on November 10, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City, with Sister Diana Blong officiating. The burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, providing a final resting place for a man who cherished his family deeply.
Gene was born on August 27, 1940, to Lawrence and Kathryn Johnson in Charles City. He was a devoted husband to Christina “Chris” Emerson, whom he married on November 26, 1966. Their love story is one that is fondly remembered by all who knew them.
Throughout his life, Gene worked as a GM mechanic, initially at Bissonnette’s Chevrolet, and later drove semi-trucks for Anthony Bill Trucking until retirement. Even after the passing of his beloved wife, he remained active, hauling grain for Dennis Brinkman. His dedication to family extended beyond his professional life, as he also served in the Floyd County Sheriff’s Reserves.
Gene was passionate about the outdoors, often spending time hunting pheasant and turkey, and enjoying fishing and camping trips with his family. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he frequently shared stories of their accomplishments.
He is survived by his four children: Gina Meyer of Phoenix, Arizona, Lon Johnson (Sarah) of Thornton, Iowa, Dawne Bilharz (Brad), and Jacqueline Johnson, all residing in Charles City. Gene is also remembered by his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who carry on his legacy.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife Chris, parents, and brothers-in-law. His passing marks the end of an era for his family, who will hold onto the memories of his love, guidance, and unwavering support.
