Team USA’s pool team has welcomed an unexpected addition in the form of Russian world champion Fedor Gorst. At just 25 years old, Gorst is currently the world’s top-ranked pool player, boasting an impressive resume that includes two 9-ball world championships and a victory at the US Open. His journey from Russia to becoming a key player for the United States reflects both personal ambition and the shifting landscape of international sports.
Gorst’s transition to Team USA began more than three years ago, following a suspension from major competitions due to an International Olympic Committee-led ban on Russian athletes after the country’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This pivotal moment prompted Gorst to expedite a planned trip to the United States, where he ultimately decided to make his home. He relocated to southern Indiana with his girlfriend, Kristina Tkach, the top-ranked female pool player, and they began living with Gorst’s manager.
In his new environment, Gorst quickly adapted, despite the challenges of moving to a smaller town after living in Moscow. He made valuable connections, including aiding fellow Ukrainian player Vitaliy Patsura in relocating to the US. With the acquisition of a green card in 2023, Gorst was able to compete under the American flag, despite the geopolitical tensions between the two nations.
The Mosconi Cup, set to take place at the end of the year, is a crucial event where Team USA faces Team Europe, akin to golf’s Ryder Cup. Historically, the US has struggled in this contest, winning only two of the last 15 competitions. Gorst’s inclusion in the five-man roster provides a much-needed boost in talent. Mike Panozzo, publisher of Billiards Digest, remarked, “Technically, it’s kind of farcical, but it made sense… This is where he’s living. This is where he’s most comfortable.”
The Mosconi Cup is distinct from regular pool tournaments, drawing around 3,000 fans annually, compared to the 500 tickets sold for the finals at the US Open. The atmosphere is electric, with fans cheering and creating a lively environment reminiscent of major sports events. Panozzo added, “It’s good for pool, it’s good for Fedor, it’s good for the US.”
Gorst, known for his intense competitive spirit, showcases a different persona off the table. He has cultivated a strong social media presence, amassing over 700,000 followers. His brand features merchandise that reflects his American identity, such as shirts with slogans like “Stars-Stripes-Strokes.” He has also gained exposure through appearances on popular podcasts, including two interviews with Joe Rogan, who praised the game of pool and its potential for wider appreciation.
Born in 2000 in Moscow, Gorst’s introduction to cue sports began with Russian pyramid, a game with small pockets that was initially a challenge for him due to his height. Influenced by a coach, he shifted to pool and quickly made a name for himself in amateur tournaments. His father’s untimely death at age 14 spurred Gorst to take the sport seriously, with ambitions of supporting his family. He stated, “2015 was when I realized I wanted to make a career out of it.”
Under the guidance of Dutch coach Johan Ruijsink, Gorst developed his skills and competed internationally, winning the Junior World 9-Ball Championship at just 17. His ascent continued, culminating in a victory at the 9-Ball World Pool Championship in 2019. However, the onset of geopolitical issues disrupted his trajectory.
Following the IOC’s ban on Russian athletes in February 2022, Gorst made the decision to move to the United States, seeking to continue his career amidst the turmoil. He initially participated in regional tournaments before returning to major competitions under a neutral flag. Gorst’s adaptation to life in the US was challenging, but he persevered by focusing on smaller events that were not governed by international regulations.
The support from his peers, including helping Patsura navigate his own immigration process, illustrates the camaraderie within the professional pool community. Gorst’s return to major competitions has been marked by a strategic partnership with Matchroom Sport, the leading organizer of pool events.
Despite the challenges facing American pool, including a decline in pool halls and inconsistent professional tours, Matchroom has sought to revitalize the sport. The company aims to attract a broader audience, enhancing the presentation of tournaments to engage casual sports fans.
Gorst’s journey is a testament to resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. As he competes for Team USA, he also carries the weight of expectations and the hopes for a resurgence of American pool on the international stage. His performances, particularly in high-stakes events like the Mosconi Cup, will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of his career and the sport itself.
With his sights set on further championships and a burgeoning legacy, Gorst encapsulates the evolving landscape of professional pool. He remains driven by both the pursuit of trophies and the financial stability that a successful career can provide. “For me, it was easy, I’ll be honest, financial motivation was always the biggest motivator for me,” he shared, highlighting his pragmatic approach to the sport.
As Gorst continues to make headlines, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and a reminder of the power of sport to transcend borders and unite individuals from diverse backgrounds.
