URGENT UPDATE: The Chicago Cubs are making headlines after earning a major league-high of three Gold Glove awards this year, showcasing their exceptional fielding talent. The announcement was made by Rawlings on October 15, 2023, confirming that Pete Crow-Armstrong, Ian Happ, and Nico Hoerner have all secured baseball’s prestigious defensive honor.
This year marks a significant milestone for Crow-Armstrong, as he clinches his first Gold Glove in a breakout season as an All-Star center fielder. Happ continues to impress, winning his fourth consecutive Gold Glove in left field, while Hoerner celebrates his second win at second base. This achievement underscores the Cubs’ defensive prowess and commitment to excellence.
In addition to the Cubs’ triumph, teams like Kansas City, Boston, and San Francisco each had two players honored. Notably, Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia of the Royals made history as the first shortstop-third baseman teammates to win the award in the same season since J.J. Hardy and Manny Machado in 2013. Witt earned his second straight Gold Glove, solidifying his reputation as a top performer.
Also noteworthy, Patrick Bailey and Logan Webb from the Giants became the first battery from the same team to win Gold Gloves in the same season since Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright achieved the feat in 2013. Bailey’s victory marks his second consecutive win at catcher.
The Boston Red Sox saw success with right fielder Wilyer Abreu and center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela, with Abreu earning his second Gold Glove and Rafaela achieving the honor for the first time. Other notable winners include Max Fried of the New York Yankees and Steven Kwan of the Cleveland Guardians—both four-time winners. Matt Olson of Atlanta also earned his third Gold Glove, demonstrating the competitive nature of the league.
Additional winners include Dillon Dingler from Detroit, Marcus Semien of Texas, Mauricio Dubón of Houston, and Ty France, who was traded from Minnesota to Toronto on July 31. In the National League, Fernando Tatis Jr., Masyn Winn, Ke’Bryan Hayes, and Javier Sanoja also received Gold Gloves, with Tatis and Hayes each securing their second awards.
Players receiving Gold Gloves also earned financial bonuses: Semien received a $100,000 bonus, while Kwan and Witt each received $50,000. Hayes was awarded a $25,000 bonus for his achievement. The voting process, conducted among managers and selected coaches who cannot vote for their own players, incorporates a defensive index developed by the Society for American Baseball Research, which comprises approximately 25% of the total scoring.
This announcement not only celebrates individual achievements but also reinforces the Cubs’ position as a formidable team in Major League Baseball. Fans and players alike are eagerly anticipating how these accolades will impact the Cubs’ performance moving forward. As the postseason approaches, all eyes will be on the Cubs and their stellar defensive lineup.
