A group of military officers has been arrested in Guinea-Bissau for allegedly plotting a coup, according to a statement from the armed forces on Friday. The arrests occurred just days before the start of the general election campaign, raising concerns about the nation’s stability ahead of the crucial November elections.

The alleged coup attempt reportedly involved several senior officers, who were initially reported missing starting on Monday. In a statement, the Armed Forces General Staff emphasized that this situation threatens the peace and stability necessary for socio-economic development and attracting foreign investment.

Details of the Allegations

The alleged plot was purportedly led by Brig. Gen. Daba Na Walna, the director of a military training school, supported by other senior military figures. As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding the number of individuals involved or the next steps for the accused officers.

This incident marks the second known coup attempt against President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, who has faced significant controversy since taking office in 2020. Tensions have escalated as the opposition claims that Embaló’s term should have ended on February 27, 2023. However, the Supreme Court of Guinea-Bissau ruled that his term would extend until September 4, 2023. Embaló has set the date for the upcoming elections on November 30, 2023, which further complicates the political landscape.

Historical Context and Current Tensions

Guinea-Bissau, a small West African nation, has a tumultuous history marked by numerous coups since its independence from Portugal over 50 years ago. The current political climate reflects ongoing struggles for power and governance. The opposition has refused to recognize Embaló as the legitimate president, exacerbating divisions within the country.

In March, a mission from a West African regional bloc aimed at resolving the political crisis abruptly left Guinea-Bissau, citing threats of expulsion from Embaló’s government. The political atmosphere remains charged as the nation approaches a pivotal electoral period.

The international community will be closely watching the developments in Guinea-Bissau, particularly as the country prepares for elections that are crucial for its democratic future and stability. The outcome of the ongoing investigations into the alleged coup plot may have significant implications for both the armed forces and the political landscape ahead of the November elections.
