NCAA Gambling Probe Expands: Players Dismissed Ahead of Season

UPDATE: As the college basketball season approaches, a major NCAA gambling investigation is escalating, affecting the eligibility of multiple players across various schools. Just announced, Western Michigan has confirmed that senior guard Justice Williams will not compete “pending the results of a recent NCAA investigation.” This probe is linked to a broader investigation concerning betting violations involving approximately 30 current or former men’s basketball players.

The NCAA’s investigation comes at a critical time as the college basketball season tips off on Monday, November 6, 2023. This unfolding situation is deeply concerning for teams and fans alike, with significant implications for player statuses and game integrity.

In a shocking development, Wisconsin announced that senior forward Elijah Gray has been dismissed from the team due to “events preceding his enrollment.” Meanwhile, Dayton is withholding sophomore guard Adam Njie from competition after being informed by the NCAA of potential eligibility concerns related to matters before his enrollment.

Sources reveal that the NCAA’s probe is intertwined with a federal investigation into point-shaving allegations in college basketball. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania is actively investigating, with multiple college athletes reportedly interviewed. This is part of a wider investigation where some of the same bettors implicated in the NBA betting scandal are linked to suspicious betting patterns in college basketball.

Earlier reports indicated that Eastern Kentucky guard Amarr Knox is also currently ineligible, further widening the impact of this investigation. Knox’s previous institution, Alabama State, is noted as a school of interest in the ongoing probe.

The NCAA’s inquiry includes former players from institutions such as Arizona State, Temple, and North Carolina A&T. Reports suggest that indictments are anticipated as investigations continue.

As the NCAA and federal authorities delve deeper, the stakes are high for college basketball programs across the nation. Fans and stakeholders are advised to stay tuned for updates, as the ramifications of this investigation could shake the foundation of the upcoming season.

This developing story underscores the urgent need for transparency and integrity in college athletics, particularly as the college basketball season prepares to commence. Further updates are expected as the situation evolves, and the NCAA is likely to announce additional findings in the coming days.
