PHOENIX — The legacy of 16-year-old Mario Abraham Torres Jr. continues to resonate through the lives he saved following his tragic death. Known for his passion for boxing, Abraham’s life was cut short in September 2023 due to a severe injury sustained during sparring. His mother, Brooke Ballesteros, described her son as an extraordinary individual who was dedicated to everything he pursued. “He was an incredible boxer, and he was going places,” she said.
Abraham suffered a mild concussion that went unnoticed before he entered the ring. Following a hit to the head, a ruptured blood vessel caused him to collapse, leading to his untimely passing. In the wake of their loss, Ballesteros made a decision that would profoundly impact others—she chose to donate her son’s organs. “Five people got his organs,” she noted, emphasizing the potential for life-saving donations.
Among the recipients was Christopher Leslie, who faced critical health challenges due to failing kidneys. Diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease, Leslie underwent dialysis while waiting for a transplant. In early 2023, he received a life-changing call from his medical team about a potential match. “They called and said, from a scale of 1 being the best and 10 being the worst, it was a 2,” Leslie recalled, expressing his disbelief at the rarity of such a high-quality donation.
The emotional connection between Leslie and Abraham’s family culminated in a poignant meeting on Thursday. After years of communication, the two finally embraced, marking a moment of gratitude and recognition. “He’s definitely a hero,” Leslie said of Abraham, underscoring the impact of his donation.
Honoring a Hero at the Phoenix Raceway
In a heartfelt tribute, Abraham will be honored at the Phoenix Raceway this year, with his image displayed on the car of driver Joey Gase. Gase has made it a tradition to raise awareness for organ donation, an issue close to his heart due to his own experiences with organ donation in his family. “For anyone to say yes to donation is a selfless act and helps so many different people,” Gase stated, emphasizing the interconnectedness of humanity.
As family and friends gathered at the raceway, they took the opportunity to write messages on Gase’s car in memory of Abraham. This act of remembrance served not only to reflect on the life lost but also to celebrate the lives saved through organ donation. Leslie poignantly remarked, “It could save a life. It saved mine for sure.”
The story of Mario Abraham Torres Jr. serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one life can have on many others, reinforcing the vital importance of organ donation and the enduring legacy of those who choose to give.
