Ukrainian Pilot Calls Gripen “Only Jet Worth Selling My Soul For”

UPDATE: Famed Ukrainian pilot Vadym Voroshylov has declared the Swedish-made Gripen JAS-39 as the only fighter jet he would “sell my soul for.” This statement comes amid critical developments as Ukraine moves to strengthen its air force against ongoing Russian aggression.

In a passionate Instagram post earlier this week, Voroshylov stated that the Gripen is the “ideal option” for Ukraine, emphasizing its design tailored for the current conflict. This declaration follows a significant agreement where Sweden and Ukraine signed a letter of intent to potentially export up to 150 Gripen E fighter jets to Kyiv.

The Gripen is hailed as an essential asset for Ukraine’s air force, particularly as it was engineered to combat threats like those posed by Russia. The aircraft is designed to operate effectively even when air bases are under attack, making it a strategic choice in the face of Russia’s relentless missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian airfields.

Voroshylov, a decorated pilot recognized as a Hero of Ukraine in 2022, has a notable track record, including shooting down multiple enemy missiles and drones. He outlined his enthusiasm for the Gripen, citing its ability to operate from damaged airfields and its reduced radar signature due to its unique air intake design.

“The Gripen is built for rapid response,” Voroshylov remarked, noting that it can be refueled with its engine running, allowing pilots to return to the air in mere minutes during critical moments. This capability is crucial as “every second counts” in a conflict zone.

The Gripen can also utilize various weaponry from both American and European sources, enhancing Ukraine’s operational flexibility. Voroshylov highlighted that the Gripen is one of the most cost-effective modern jets, with operating costs lower than the MiG-29. This financial efficiency is vital as Ukraine continues to navigate its military needs amidst ongoing hostilities.

Swedish defense manufacturer Saab has indicated plans to establish a final assembly plant for Gripens in Ukraine, which could facilitate local production if the deal is finalized. This move would not only bolster Ukraine’s air force but also strengthen its defense industry.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed optimism about the Gripen deal, suggesting that the first jets could arrive as early as next year. While training for Ukrainian pilots is already underway, challenges remain in integrating the new aircraft into Ukraine’s diverse fleet, which currently includes aging Soviet designs and modern Western jets.

Voroshylov’s advocacy for Western aircraft has been consistent, as he previously lobbied for F-16s, asserting that advanced jets are crucial for fortifying Ukraine as a “shield” for democratic values.

The urgency of this acquisition cannot be overstated, as Ukraine faces ongoing threats from Russian forces. The Gripen’s introduction into service could significantly enhance Ukraine’s air combat capabilities, providing a much-needed boost amid the conflict’s escalating intensity.

As developments continue to unfold, military experts and officials will be closely monitoring the progress of this potential deal, which could reshape the dynamics of aerial warfare in the region. Stay tuned for more updates on this critical issue.
