Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) has announced significant expansion projects in Idaho and North Carolina, aiming to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and accommodate a growing workforce. The company will invest approximately $90 million over the next two years across three key developments.

The most prominent project involves the construction of a 150,000-square-foot electronic device manufacturing facility on SEL’s Schwartz Campus in Moscow, Idaho. This $50 million facility is expected to be completed by 2027 and will be strategically located next to SEL’s existing printed circuit board factory, thereby bolstering its production capacity. According to Kate Wilhite, senior media manager at SEL, the company is currently in the process of securing necessary permits and plans to begin grading at the Moscow site in November. This initial phase is projected to continue until April, with construction to follow immediately thereafter.

In addition to the Moscow project, SEL plans to expand its presence in Boise, Idaho, by purchasing and renovating a 170,000-square-foot building. This $25 million investment is expected to be finalized by 2026, reflecting the company’s commitment to adapting its facilities to meet the demands of a growing workforce.

SEL is also set to invest $15 million to enhance its operations in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company will construct a 50,000-square-foot office building adjacent to its current facility at 901 Center Park Drive, with completion anticipated by 2027. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to support the growing panels and enclosures manufacturing operations in the region.

Despite the challenges posed by recent economic and political fluctuations, SEL Founder Ed Schweitzer expressed optimism about the company’s future in the press release. “Our teams have been making adjustments to our existing spaces to increase capacity, but we are at a point where larger capital investments are needed to continue inventing, designing, and building products to meet the needs of our customers,” he stated.

SEL’s decisions regarding expansion are influenced by various factors, including data from the SEL Index of Freedom. This annual ranking evaluates the 50 U.S. states based on government efficiency, regulatory freedom, and energy resiliency, which are deemed essential for fostering a robust business environment.

The company’s ambitious expansion plans reflect its ongoing commitment to growth and innovation in the engineering sector, positioning SEL to better serve its customers and contribute to the local economies of Idaho and North Carolina.
