Spurs Honor Popovich with New Banner During Home Opener

UPDATE: The San Antonio Spurs have unveiled a new banner honoring Gregg Popovich during their home opener on October 29, 2023. Fans in the stands were greeted with the sight of the banner, which quietly celebrates Popovich’s incredible achievement of 1,390 NBA regular-season wins, the most in league history.

The unveiling took place without any public ceremony, reflecting Popovich’s preference for a modest acknowledgment of his storied career. The banner, which reads “Pop 1,390,” is distinct from other banners in the arena, featuring five stars at the top, symbolizing the five NBA championships he led the Spurs to as head coach. It hangs alongside the jerseys of other Spurs legends, including Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili.

Popovich stepped down from his coaching role in May 2023, concluding a remarkable three-decade tenure that transformed him into a coaching icon and Hall of Famer. His departure followed a health incident on November 2, 2024, when he suffered a stroke at the team’s arena. While he no longer coaches, Popovich remains with the Spurs as team president, continuing to shape the franchise’s future.

The emotional response from the fans during the unveiling highlights the deep connection Popovich has fostered with the Spurs community over the years. As the banner sways in the arena, it serves as a poignant reminder of his legacy and the impact he has had on the team and the NBA at large.

As the Spurs move forward in the new season, all eyes will be on how they adapt to life without one of the greatest coaches in basketball history. The team’s next game is set for November 1, 2023, where they will look to build on the excitement of this momentous occasion.

Fans and supporters are encouraged to share their thoughts and memories of Popovich as the Spurs honor his unparalleled contributions to the team and the sport.
