Sophia was welcomed by a jubilant crowd on Thursday, with cheers echoing through the streets of Minneapolis as she rode in a white limousine escorted by a police motorcade.
Sophia was critically injured on August 27, 2023, when a gunman opened fire during a prayer session, tragically claiming the lives of two children and injuring 20 others. Her recovery has been nothing short of miraculous; doctors initially feared for her life after she sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
In a touching moment captured on video by Mayor Jacob Frey, residents waved signs and balloons, celebrating her discharge from Gillette Children’s Hospital. The mayor expressed his joy, stating, “Welcome home, Sophia. Minneapolis loves you.”
Sophia’s journey has been incredibly challenging. Following the shooting, she underwent extensive treatment, including the removal of half of her skull to alleviate brain swelling. Yet, against all odds, she showed remarkable progress, eventually breathing on her own and regaining strength.
Her mother, a pediatric critical care nurse, was at work during the incident and learned of the tragedy only after her children were affected. Sophia’s brother, who was with her that day, survived unharmed, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.
As she returns home just in time to celebrate her upcoming 13th birthday, Sophia’s family remains optimistic. A spokesperson stated, “The road ahead for Sophia is steep, but she is climbing it with fierce determination.”
After her discharge, Sophia made a stop at Hennepin Healthcare to thank the first responders who provided care. Images from the visit show her being greeted with hugs and a sign reading “Sophia Strong,” highlighting the community’s support.
