Michigan Hockey Defeats Defending Champs, Remains Undefeated

BREAKING: The No. 3 Michigan Wolverines hockey team delivered a stunning 4-0 victory against the defending national champions, the No. 2 Western Michigan Broncos, maintaining their unbeaten record this season. This decisive win occurred at Yost Ice Arena on Thursday night, with freshman goalie Jack Ivankovic making an impressive 32 saves to secure the shutout.

Michigan started strong, scoring just 1 minute and 50 seconds into the game. Freshman Jayden Perron showcased his skill by converting a slick pass from Nick Moldenhauer into a goal, marking his fourth of the season. The Wolverines (7-0) dominated the matchup, which featured two top-five teams, with their performance drawing significant attention.

Both teams battled frequently in the penalty box, with Michigan’s top-ranked power play making a significant impact. The Wolverines capitalized on two power play opportunities, while the Broncos (3-2) struggled, going 0 for 8 with the man advantage and now standing at just 2 for 30 on the power play this season.

Michigan extended its lead to 2-0 at 8:12 in the second period when Michael Hage, a first-round pick for the Montreal Canadiens in 2024, scored his sixth goal of the year after a scramble in front of the net. Hage, who had entered the game ranked fifth nationally in scoring with 11 points, added two more points to his tally with an assist on Michigan’s third goal.

That third goal came on a power play just 1 minute and 37 seconds into the third period, where freshman Adam Valentini scored following a deflection off Hage’s helmet. As the game closed, junior forward Garrett Schifsky sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 10 seconds left.

Throughout the game, Ivankovic was a standout performer, particularly in the first period, where he faced several high-danger chances from the Broncos. His stellar play, combined with a little luck—like when Bobby Cowan hit the post late in the first period—kept Western Michigan scoreless. Ivankovic has now allowed just seven goals in seven games, a remarkable feat for the rookie.

This victory marks Michigan’s best start since 1979, with a staggering goal differential of 44-7 against opponents. The Wolverines will look to maintain their momentum as they prepare for a rematch against the Broncos on Friday night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo.

The stakes are high as both teams aim for supremacy in this early-season clash, and fans are eagerly anticipating what promises to be another thrilling encounter.
