A new audiobook adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s iconic “Harry Potter” series is set to captivate fans with a fresh cast, bringing a new energy to the beloved characters. Scheduled for release on November 4, 2023, this production marks a significant departure from previous versions, featuring an ensemble cast that includes young actors in key roles.
During a recording session at a London studio, young talents Frankie Treadaway, Max Lester, and Arabella Stanton recorded background sounds, or “walla,” for the adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” This marks the first audiobook adaptation of the series with multiple cast members voicing the characters, rather than relying on a single narrator. While the trio voices Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the initial books, an older cast will take over in later installments.
The new production boasts a star-studded line-up, featuring Cush Jumbo as the narrator, Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed portraying Professor Snape, and Michelle Gomez adding her flair to Professor McGonagall. Matthew Macfadyen lends his voice to Voldemort, while Keira Knightley will appear later in the series as Dolores Umbridge.
Stanton, who is also set to portray Hermione in the upcoming HBO series, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I can’t say much, because they’ve cast a Mimblewimble tongue-tying spell on me.” She recently began filming for the show, adding to the excitement surrounding the expanding universe of Harry Potter.
The young actors shared their experiences in the studio, discussing the unique challenges and joys of bringing the iconic characters to life. Treadaway noted, “You really got a taste of what it was going to be like,” while Lester remarked on the professionalism of the recording process. Stanton emphasized the importance of adding emotion to their performances, saying, “You want to make your voice come alive.”
Food also played a role in their experience, with Treadaway jokingly referencing a “chocolate fridge” dedicated to snacks, which the team often had to restock. This lighthearted camaraderie helped foster a creative environment as they worked on the project.
Each actor recounted their introductions to the Harry Potter series. Stanton began reading the books at age eight after friends encouraged her, while Lester picked up a popular bestseller he spotted at a bookstore. Treadaway, on the other hand, felt compelled to join in on the last movie after his sister watched the series chronologically, despite initially hesitating due to its age rating.
The young trio expressed both pride and excitement about stepping into such well-known roles. Treadaway said, “I guess that’s sort of why you have a bit of pride in yourself knowing that such a big name and characters, you get to associate yourself with them.” Lester echoed this sentiment, highlighting the sense of community among fans and actors alike.
The actors eagerly anticipate the release of the audiobook, particularly the sound effects and spell-casting scenes. Treadaway shared his enthusiasm for the battle scenes, anticipating how they will sound with the accompanying audio. Stanton expressed her excitement about hearing the spells, while Lester looked forward to the interactions among characters.
As they continue to explore their acting careers, all three young talents expressed a desire to pursue more opportunities in the industry. Stanton affirmed her passion for acting, while Lester articulated the joy he finds in the craft, stating, “It’s not work if you do something that you love.”
This new adaptation of the “Harry Potter” series not only reflects a new generation of talent but also reinforces the enduring legacy of Rowling’s creation. As the release date approaches, fans around the world look forward to experiencing the magic anew through this innovative audiobook format.
