UPDATE: Filming for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is officially underway, with Elle Fanning stepping into the iconic role of Effie Trinket. The excitement grows as original star Elizabeth Banks has publicly endorsed Fanning, sending her heartfelt well wishes.
The prequel, based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, explores Panem on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, occurring 24 years prior to the original film series. Fanning’s portrayal of Effie will showcase her as the stylist for Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, as they prepare for the gripping events of the games.
At the Academy Museum Gala on Saturday, Fanning revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that filming is progressing rapidly, stating, “I’m almost done with my section. Effie is on the screen now.” The anticipation is palpable as fans await her interpretation of the beloved character.
In a touching exchange, Fanning shared that Banks reached out to her with encouragement, sending “beautiful flowers” and a message saying, “May the odds be ever in your favor.” Fanning expressed her admiration, saying, “She made that role iconic and so lovable, and I hope I can live up to what she did for the fans.”
Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2026. Alongside Fanning and Zada, the cast features Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, and Ben Wang. Notably, Ralph Fiennes takes on the role of the villainous President Snow.
Fanning has previously credited the fans for her casting, revealing to MTV earlier this year that “the studio [Lionsgate] said they were getting kind of hounded online, like, ‘Elle needs to play Effie.’” The overwhelming support from fans has clearly made a significant impact on the production.
As the filming continues, fans are eagerly awaiting more updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses from this highly anticipated installment in the Hunger Games franchise. Stay tuned for more developing news!
