New York City has inaugurated a new electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging station in the Bronx, enhancing accessibility to clean transportation in one of the city’s most underserved areas. The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) officially opened the public fast-charging station at its White Plains Road Municipal Parking Field, located at 2071 White Plains Road in the Bronx Park East section.
This new hub features four DC fast chargers, including three 50 kW units and one 175 kW unit. These chargers can provide an 80% charge to most EVs in approximately 20 minutes. Additionally, four Level 2 chargers are available, allowing for a full charge of most vehicles in six to eight hours.
The Bronx has a significant concentration of Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) drivers, with nearly 1,000 living nearby and another 1,500 in adjacent neighborhoods. TLC drivers can benefit from a 15% discount on charging fees by signing up through the EV Connect app, making this hub particularly valuable for local taxi operators.
Ydanis Rodriguez, the NYC DOT Commissioner and a former cab driver, emphasized the importance of this installation in advancing greener transportation. “Achieving a greener transportation future means investing in electric vehicle chargers that will help us say goodbye to fossil fuels,” Rodriguez stated. He added that residents of the East Bronx will significantly benefit from the new chargers, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to environmental initiatives.
This station aligns with the city’s Green Rides Initiative, which aims to convert all high-volume for-hire vehicle trips to zero-emission or wheelchair-accessible services by 2030. Furthermore, the Bronx station contributes to Mayor Eric Adams’ PlaNYC target, which aspires to ensure that every New Yorker lives within 2.5 miles of a fast charger by 2035. With this latest addition, the percentage of New Yorkers living near a fast charger has increased from 81% to 88%.
Historically, the Bronx has had the fewest fast chargers of any borough, with existing stations primarily located in more affluent areas of Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn and Queens. The NYC DOT has stated that this new location is part of a broader initiative to make EV charging more equitable and accessible.
As of September 2025, there are 79,036 EVs registered in New York City, representing approximately 25% of all registered EVs in New York State. This expansion of charging infrastructure is crucial as the city transitions towards a more sustainable transportation model, addressing both environmental concerns and the needs of underserved communities.
The opening of this fast-charging hub marks a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and accessible transportation future for all New Yorkers.
