Mavericks Coach Kidd Delays Decision on Rookie Flagg’s Role

LAS VEGAS: In a surprising twist, Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd has praised rookie Cooper Flagg for his impressive performance as starting point guard in the team’s final preseason games but has not committed to keeping him in that role for the upcoming season. Following a solid 121-94 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, Kidd stated, “There are a lot of good, positive stories here, and so we have some time to make a decision.” The urgency of this decision looms as the season opener approaches.

Flagg, only 18 years old, took over as point guard after starting the first two preseason games at forward, a position he played during his time at Duke. In his two games at the point, he averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, showcasing his potential alongside a formidable lineup featuring players like Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis.

Despite Flagg’s commendable performance, Kidd highlighted concerns about the team’s offensive rhythm. The Mavericks faced a sluggish start against the Lakers, trailing 22-10 before Flagg exited midway through the first quarter. “I thought our offense was too stagnant early,” Kidd remarked, underlining the need for improvement as the team prepares for the regular season.

Flagg’s transition to point guard comes with challenges. Kidd noted that the rookie must enhance his understanding of game situations, saying, “He’s got to keep an index of who got shots, what was the last shot, and that’ll come with reps.” Flagg acknowledged his own struggles during the game, emphasizing the importance of awareness on the court. “I made some mental lapses today, time and score situations. Just got to stay more attached [defensively],” he stated.

Flagg’s defensive performance was put to the test early on, as he struggled to contain Lakers guard Gabe Vincent, who scored 18 points and hit five 3-pointers in quick succession. Kidd defended Flagg, saying, “No matter if you’re 6-4, 6-2, or 6-8, when you’re in a pick-and-roll in this league, it’s hard.” He expressed confidence in Flagg’s competitive spirit, predicting he will adapt quickly to the demands of the position.

The Mavericks will need to finalize their starting lineup soon as the regular season draws near. All eyes will be on Kidd’s decision regarding Flagg’s future role with the team. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if the rookie can solidify his place as the starting point guard or if the Mavericks will explore other options.

As the NBA season approaches, the pressure mounts on the Mavericks to make strategic choices that could impact their success. Keep an eye on upcoming announcements as this developing story unfolds.
