Theatre on the Road’s annual production of “Dracula” is set to take the stage at the Stissing Center for Arts & Culture in Pine Plains on October 17, 2025, at 19:00. This year’s rendition features notable character changes, offering fresh interpretations of classic roles that have traditionally been portrayed by male actors.
In a significant twist, the character of Van Helsing, usually depicted as a male figure, will be played by actress and director Michelle Kafel-Cintron. In her portrayal, Kafel-Cintron aims to challenge conventional gender roles in theater. Similarly, the character of Renfield will be reimagined as a female counterpart, played by Marisa Gorsline. While the narrative does not develop a romance between the two characters, Gorsline’s performance will explore a complex and codependent relationship, broadening the emotional landscape of the story.
Kafel-Cintron, who also serves as the production’s artistic director, explained the creative vision behind the character changes. “We originally had the idea of Van Helsing as a female, as Frank Marquette and I both are very open to the idea of pushing boundaries where women can take on these strong, lead roles,” she stated. Marquette, co-founder of the theater company, has collaborated closely with Kafel-Cintron on this innovative approach.
This year’s production also incorporates music, adding a new layer of depth to the performance. The selection ranges from classical compositions to pieces reflective of the 1920s, enhancing specific scenes without overshadowing the narrative. “To be clear, this is not a musical or music-driven production, but we found a few places where music could be incorporated to make the setting even more exciting and entertaining,” Kafel-Cintron noted.
The themes woven throughout the play include the classic struggle between good and evil, the critique of unchecked power, and the need for unity in overcoming obstacles that threaten the common good. This interpretation aims to resonate with contemporary audiences while remaining true to the essence of the original story.
Tickets for the performance can be purchased through the Stissing Center’s website at thestissingcenter.org/events-list/dracula-2025. The venue is located at 2950 Church St., Pine Plains, inviting community members and theater enthusiasts alike to engage with this unique reimagining of a classic tale.
