UPDATE: A catastrophic explosion at a military explosives plant in central Tennessee has left 18 people missing and has devastated the local community. The blast, which occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. local time on Friday, obliterated a building at the Accurate Energetic Systems facility, sending debris flying for over half a mile and shaking homes as far as 15 miles away.
The scene is chaotic, with emergency responders on-site and ongoing efforts to locate the missing individuals. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “We need our communities to come together and understand that we’ve lost a lot of people.” He highlighted that one of the missing is a childhood friend, emphasizing the personal toll on the tight-knit community.
The explosion not only resulted in immediate destruction but also triggered a series of smaller blasts, complicating rescue efforts. Over 300 emergency personnel are currently involved in the response, and officials are urging the public to avoid the area as investigations begin. “Prayers are needed … our hearts are broken for the families and for the loved ones that lost their lives,” said Wendall Stinson, CEO of Accurate Energetic Systems.

One local, Gentry Stover, remarked, “I thought the house had collapsed with me inside of it.” Another resident, Cody Warren, who lives over 20 miles away, initially believed an earthquake had struck. The impact of the blast has left charred debris and mangled vehicles scattered across a wide area.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are utilizing cell phone records to determine who was present at the plant during the explosion. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is sending a response team to assist with the investigation, which is expected to last several days.
The Accurate Energetic Systems plant, which produces military and demolition explosives, is a significant employer in the area, with around 80 employees.
