After more than three decades with the New York Police Department (NYPD), Chief John Chell has announced his retirement from the force. Chell, who currently holds the position of Chief of Department, the highest rank for a uniformed officer in the NYPD, has been instrumental in shaping the department’s strategies for crime-fighting and public safety. His departure marks the end of an era for the NYPD, which has seen significant changes during his tenure.
In a statement, Mayor Eric Adams expressed gratitude for Chell’s service. “Our city owes him a debt of gratitude,” he said, highlighting the chief’s contributions to both the department and the city. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch also acknowledged Chell’s dedication, stating, “I would like to thank Chief John Chell for his more than 30 years of service to this department and New York City.”
Transition of Leadership
Following Chell’s retirement, Chief Michael LiPetri will assume the role of interim Chief of Department. LiPetri currently serves as Chief of Crime Control Strategies, where he oversees the implementation of the NYPD’s precision policing plan. His previous experience includes serving as the commanding officer of various precincts, including Transit District 32 and the 101st, 79th, and 75th Precincts.
Mayor Adams praised LiPetri’s track record, stating, “Chief LiPetri was the architect of the NYPD’s successful crime-fighting strategy resulting in the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims in recorded history.” His ability to assess and allocate resources effectively, while fostering community partnerships, positions him well for the challenges ahead in the top uniformed role.
Commissioner Tisch added that LiPetri will not only lead the NYPD’s efforts to reduce crime and disorder but will also work on building public trust within the community. LiPetri will continue in his role as Chief of Crime Control Strategies, a position he has held for the past six years, ensuring continuity in leadership during this transition.
The retirement of Chief Chell and the appointment of Chief LiPetri represents a pivotal moment for the NYPD as it navigates evolving public safety needs and community expectations. As the department prepares for this new chapter, the focus remains on maintaining a safe environment for the citizens of New York City.
