College Students Tackle Financial Skills in Urgent New Program

URGENT UPDATE: A new financial literacy program is underway for college students in Barton County, aiming to equip them with essential money management skills. Launched by Michelle Beran, the 4-H and Youth Development Agent for the Cottonwood District, this initiative leverages K-State Extension resources to address a growing concern: the financial skills gap among young adults.

In a recent session, Beran engaged a small group of students in a critical dialogue about distinguishing between wants and needs—a conversation that proved challenging yet vital. The focus of the program is to establish SMART financial goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely—targeting both immediate objectives and long-term aspirations. Students are encouraged to set goals for the current school year, as well as intermediate goals of 3-5 years and long-term goals spanning 8-10 years.

The need for financial literacy has never been more urgent, as students face increasing costs related to education and living expenses. Beran noted the impressive ambitions of several participants, who expressed desires to save for significant milestones, such as purchasing a home and advancing their careers.

Moving forward, the program will explore practical financial skills, including budgeting and expense categorization. Students will work together to create a basic budget, integrating their income sources and necessary expenditures. One notable inquiry from the students was about savings: “If I have money left, how much should I be putting into savings?” This question highlights the eagerness of students to make informed financial decisions.

Beran is excited about the coming months, where students will also develop skills in efficient grocery shopping and basic cooking, further preparing them for adulthood and the workforce. The initiative aims to foster not just financial stability but also a sense of empowerment among young adults.

For those interested in enhancing their financial skills, Beran encourages reaching out for guidance. She offers resources and tools for anyone looking to take charge of their financial goals and move toward greater security.

For more information on this pressing initiative or for inquiries related to 4-H Youth and Development, contact Michelle Beran at 620-793-1910 or email at [email protected]. This is an opportunity not to be missed—take the steps today toward a more secure financial future!
