Great Bridge Aims to Maintain Unbeaten Streak in Field Hockey Showdown

As the field hockey season heats up in Hampton Roads, the unbeaten Great Bridge Wildcats prepare for a challenging week ahead. Currently holding a perfect record of 10-0, Great Bridge will face Hickory on October 11 and Cox on October 12, both crucial matches that could impact their standings in the competitive landscape of the sport.

The Wildcats have showcased impressive performances this season, with standout players like Lexi Curtis and Leah Orrock contributing significantly. Together, they netted four goals in two recent victories, including a decisive 5-1 win against Southeastern District rival Nansemond River.

This week promises to be busy for other teams as well. The Poquoson Islanders, who hold a record of 9-2, recently triumphed over Gloucester with a score of 3-1, thanks in part to Lucy Carpenter‘s hat trick. Poquoson is set to host Nansemond River on October 10 before traveling to face Hickory later in the week. Gloucester, currently at 10-2, will host Kellam on October 9 at 18:00, followed by a visit to Tabb, which is ranked No. 7 in the latest MaxPreps national rankings.

Impressive Individual Performances

The excitement extends beyond team standings, as individual players have made significant impacts. Freshman Abby Cullen of Hickory has been particularly explosive, scoring four goals and providing four assists in two 6-0 victories over Tallwood and Grassfield. Hickory, boasting a strong record of 12-1, will look to continue their momentum against Great Bridge.

Norfolk Academy has also seen standout performances, with Alli Tyszko and Mia Jones combining for five goals in two wins, including a 5-0 victory over Catholic. The Bulldogs are gearing up to host Richmond’s Collegiate, ranked No. 2 nationally by MaxPreps, on October 13 at 15:30.

Other notable performances from the previous week include Robin Roelink, who netted five goals in a commanding 7-1 win for Norfolk Collegiate against Hampton Roads Academy. In a thrilling match, Rachel White scored her 10th goal of the season, clinching an overtime victory for Oscar Smith over Indian River with a score of 4-3.
