The Nobel Prize in Medicine will be announced on October 9, 2025, by a panel at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. This prestigious award, officially known as the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, recognizes significant contributions to the field of medicine and has been awarded 115 times to 229 laureates since its inception in 1901.
Last year, the prize was jointly awarded to American scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their groundbreaking discovery of microRNA. These tiny segments of genetic material act as regulatory switches within cells, influencing cellular functions and timing.
Nobel Week Schedule
The announcement of the medicine prize is the first in a series of Nobel announcements this week. The physics prize will follow on Tuesday, the chemistry prize on Wednesday, and the literature prize on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be revealed on Friday, with the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics concluding the series on October 13.
The annual award ceremony is scheduled for December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the Nobel Prizes. Nobel, a wealthy Swedish industrialist and the inventor of dynamite, passed away in 1896.
