Eatonville Advances Revitalization of Historic Hungerford Property

Eatonville is making significant strides toward revitalizing the historic Hungerford property, following a recent land purchase agreement between Orange County Public Schools and the Dr. Phillips Foundation. This initiative, which involves over 100 acres of land, aims to breathe new life into a site that holds deep historical significance for the community.

The recent community meeting was convened to discuss the updated master plan for the property and its future development. During the session, Eatonville Mayor Angie Gardner emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “To not move forward is never an option.” This sentiment reflects the collective aspiration among residents to see progress in the revitalization efforts.

Community members expressed a mix of hope and concern regarding the future of the Hungerford property. Angela Johnson, a long-time resident with personal ties to the area, articulated her hopes for the site’s development. “My mother went to Hungerford, graduated in 1955,” Johnson shared, highlighting the emotional connection many locals feel toward the property. She added, “For me, that is very important. I have a six-year-old granddaughter now. So the goal is to see something develop there that will benefit her in the future.”

As plans advance, some residents voiced apprehensions about the potential influence of external entities on the development process. At the meeting, Bruce Mount Jr. expressed a cautiously optimistic outlook, saying, “I am cautiously optimistic, but optimistic nonetheless, and I say that because we still have an opportunity to be at the table.” His remarks underscore the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of the Hungerford property.

The meeting also addressed the recent decision by the Orange County School Board, which voted unanimously to authorize the transfer of the property to Dr. Phillips Charities. This transfer includes a $1 million down payment that is intended to facilitate the execution of the master plan.

As the revitalization efforts progress, the community of Eatonville remains engaged and hopeful for a future that honors the rich history of the Hungerford property while providing benefits for generations to come. The upcoming developments will not only impact the physical landscape of Eatonville but also resonate with the personal stories and legacies tied to this historic site.
