A’ja Wilson, Dana Evans Shine as Aces Edge Mercury in Game 1

UPDATE: The Las Vegas Aces triumphed over the Phoenix Mercury 89-86 in a thrilling Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on July 14, 2023. Star players A’ja Wilson and Dana Evans each delivered a standout performance, scoring 21 points to secure the victory for the Aces.

As the clock wound down, Wilson showcased her ability to perform under pressure, netting 12 points in the final 14 minutes of the game. The Mercury’s Satou Sabally had a chance to tie the game with a long three-pointer but fell short, missing her shot with just 2 seconds left.

This hard-fought win sets the tone for an exciting series, with Game 2 scheduled for Sunday in Las Vegas.

The Aces’ bench proved critical, outscoring the Mercury’s reserves 41-16. Notable contributions included reserve Jewell Loyd with 18 points and starter Jackie Young adding 10 points. Wilson also recorded 10 rebounds, while Chelsea Gray facilitated the offense with 10 assists.

For the Mercury, Kahleah Copper led the charge with 21 points, including a breakout first half where she scored 19 points, just shy of her playoff career high. Her remarkable five three-pointers in the first half set a new personal record.

Both teams displayed fierce competitiveness, with the lead changing hands 12 times and the game featuring nine ties. The Mercury made several attempts to seize control, but the Aces consistently responded with crucial runs.

In a dramatic finish, Phoenix was down by a point with 24.6 seconds remaining. Alyssa Thomas stepped to the free-throw line but missed both attempts. Young was then fouled on the opposite end, successfully converting both free throws to cement the Aces’ win.

As the series progresses, the stakes are high in this best-of-seven championship. Fans can expect more nail-biting action as both teams vie for the title. Stay tuned for updates as Game 2 approaches!
