Two promising drivers from the European Le Mans Series, Oliver Gray and Tom Fleming, have been selected to participate in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s official Rookie Test. Scheduled for November 9, 2025, at the Bahrain International Circuit, this event provides an opportunity for young talents to showcase their skills to team principals and manufacturers.
The Rookie Test, which began in 2015, has been instrumental in elevating the careers of several drivers. Notable examples include Julien Andlauer, Mathieu Jaminet, and Norman Nato, all of whom progressed to secure competitive seats in Hypercar racing. Others, such as Mattia Drudi and Céline Martin, have transitioned to GT competition after participating in the test.
Gray and Fleming’s selection comes on the heels of the 2025 season finale, marking a significant moment in their racing careers. Last year, Théo Pourchaire made headlines by testing Peugeot’s 9X8 Hypercar during the same event, and he is now poised to make his competitive WEC debut at the same track.
Gray, at just 20 years old, has had a standout season in the LMP2 class with VDS Panis Racing. He currently leads the standings thanks to victories at Imola and Spa-Francorchamps. His impressive performance was further highlighted during his debut at the Le Mans 24 Hours, where a late suspension issue prevented him from securing victory.
“I’m over the moon to be selected for this year’s Rookie Test,” Gray stated. “The opportunity to drive the winning Hypercar is amazing, and it’s a step forward in my career as that’s where I want to be in the future. This year has been great with VDS Panis Racing; working with Charles Milesi and Esteban Masson has been fantastic, and our relationship has contributed to our success.”
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Fleming will pilot an LMGT3 car as part of the test. Currently racing with GR Racing, he has secured two podium finishes this season alongside teammates Mike Wainwright and Riccardo Pera. Fleming has also shown his versatility by competing in various championships, earning the runner-up position in the 2023 Ferrari Challenge Europe.
“I’m honored to be selected for the FIA WEC Rookie Test,” Fleming said. “To be part of such an exclusive and prestigious event is an incredible privilege. I’ve enjoyed an extremely busy racing program this year, and the Rookie Test will be the cherry on the cake to conclude what has been a successful 2025.”
The Rookie Test is set to last for five hours, following the 8 Hours of Bahrain, providing teams and manufacturers the chance to assess potential future signings across the Hypercar and LMGT3 categories. Further announcements regarding participants for the test day are expected soon, adding to the excitement surrounding this pivotal event in motorsport.
