UPDATE: Haddon Township has secured a critical victory over Sterling, winning 2-1 on September 29, 2023, in a must-win match. This triumph marks the Hawks’ first win against the Silver Knights since a narrow victory on September 14, 2023, and comes after a disappointing loss to West Deptford just days earlier.
Haddon Township’s Eamonn Sheehan emerged as the hero, scoring the winning goal in the 77th minute from a corner kick taken by Danny McIlvaine. “We were coming out with a must win,” Sheehan stated, emphasizing the team’s determination after their recent loss.
The match began with high stakes, as Haddon Township looked to bounce back following a difficult week. They took an early lead when Brody Beals converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute. However, Sterling quickly equalized, with Connor Maenner scoring just 16 seconds later, sending the game into a tense battle.
Haddon Township’s goalie, Collin Feeley, was pivotal in securing the win, making six crucial saves throughout the match. Meanwhile, Sterling’s Tyler Lucier matched him in performance, also recording six saves. The game was a back-and-forth affair, highlighting the competitive spirit of both teams.
“This week is really big,” stated Bobby McIlvaine, reflecting on the Hawks’ ambition to leave a mark in the Colonial Conference and secure a spot in the Coaches’ Cup. With this win, Haddon Township aims to build momentum as they prepare for upcoming matches against Paul VI and Lindenwold.
The victory not only boosts the Hawks’ morale but also positions them favorably as they eye tournament play. Haddon Township has shown resilience, now boasting a 4-1 record in their last five games, having allowed only five goals this season.
As the season progresses, Haddon Township is determined to capitalize on this momentum, with hopes of advancing further than last year’s South Jersey Coaches’ Cup semifinals.
