SEPTA Calls on Riders to Renew Key Cards Before Expiration

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is urging riders to update their Key cards as nearly 45,000 cards are set to expire on October 31, 2023. Specifically, 44,617 Key cards will reach their expiry date, prompting SEPTA to remind users of the importance of registering their cards for seamless service continuity.

Riders with registered Key cards can conveniently transfer their Travel Wallet funds and passes to a new card online. According to SEPTA, “Registering your card not only protects it if it’s misplaced but also makes it much easier to transfer any Travel Wallet funds or unused passes.” This proactive approach is intended to enhance the user experience and minimize disruptions for commuters.

To facilitate the transfer process, riders can purchase a replacement card for a nominal fee of $4.95. This fee is credited back if the new card is registered within 30 days. Transfers can be completed at designated SEPTA Sales Locations, by contacting the Customer Call Center, or through the card-to-card replacement service. SEPTA emphasizes the importance of contacting their Key Customer Call Center for riders with unregistered cards that have already expired.

In addition to card renewal, SEPTA is expanding payment options for its services. Riders can now pay their Bus, Metro, and Regional Rail fares using a contactless credit card, debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch. This new feature aligns with modern payment trends and offers convenience, as contactless fares are set at the same rates as Travel Wallet transactions. Furthermore, Bus and Metro riders benefit from two free transfers when using these contactless options.

SEPTA continues to remind riders of the value of keeping their Key cards updated, ensuring a smooth travel experience across the region. As the transportation authority enhances its services, users are encouraged to take advantage of these features and stay informed through official communications.
