Friends of Wissahickon Urges Community to Plant Trees Now

URGENT UPDATE: The Friends of the Wissahickon are calling on the community to take action this planting season! Starting October 4, locals can participate in a series of tree-planting events aimed at enhancing Wissahickon Park’s natural beauty and ecological health.

Throughout October and November, Friends of the Wissahickon will plant thousands of native trees including red oaks, sugar maples, and white pines. This initiative is not just about aesthetics; it’s a crucial step toward combating climate change and fostering wildlife habitats.

Join us on these dates:
Saturday, October 4 at 9 a.m. at Forbidden Drive and Thomas Mill Red Covered Bridge
Saturday, October 11 at 9 a.m. at Forbidden Drive and Kitchens Lane Bridge
Saturday, October 18 at 9 a.m. at Houston Playground
Saturday, October 25 at 9 a.m. at Hermitage Mansion (costumes encouraged!)

Planting these native trees has a significant impact: they improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and can cool neighborhoods by up to 10 degrees with a strong canopy. They also serve as a vital green buffer, protecting nearby streams and rivers by filtering runoff.

The Friends of the Wissahickon emphasize the importance of community involvement, stating that “there’s something special about planting a tree or shrub and returning each year to see it grow.” This experience not only supports the environment but also connects residents to their local ecosystem.

Even after planting, volunteers will continue to maintain these sites, ensuring the long-term success of the initiative. The organization invites those interested to support their efforts by becoming a member. New and upgrading members will receive a pocket map, discounts on merchandise, and benefits at local businesses like the Valley Green Inn.

For more details or to register for planting events, visit www.FOW.org. This is your chance to make a tangible difference right now; join us in sowing the seeds of progress!
