UPDATE: Michael Porter Jr. is making a significant impact as he adapts to his new role with the Brooklyn Nets. The 27-year-old forward has reunited with coach Jordi Fernandez, a former assistant with the Denver Nuggets, which has eased his transition to playing in the intense atmosphere of New York City.
Porter expressed gratitude for Fernandez’s support during his adjustment period. “That has been big for me,” he stated earlier today. “Just coming to a new city and feeling a little bit overwhelmed, just to have a guy as a head coach that I am working with every day, somebody like Jordi.”
The Nets acquired Porter in July, trading him along with a 2032 first-round pick for forward Cam Johnson. Last season, Porter averaged 18.2 points per game on 50.4% shooting, showcasing his elite shooting ability and readiness to take on a primary role in Brooklyn’s revamped lineup.
Fernandez highlighted Porter’s multifaceted skill set, saying, “He’s an elite shooter, great rebounder, and great cutter.” He added, “I am going to ask him to do things he’s never done before, and for those reasons, I think he’s up for the challenge.”
Porter is also excited about sharing the spotlight with Cam Thomas, who led the Nets with an impressive 24 points per game last season despite limited play due to injury. “He is one guy that has been severely underappreciated in his ability to put a team on his back and score the ball,” Porter remarked.
Meanwhile, Nets general manager Sean Marks commended Thomas’s dedication to improving during the offseason. “He’s approached this in a very mature manner,” Marks noted regarding Thomas’s negotiations for a long-term deal, which ultimately resulted in a one-year qualifying offer worth $6 million.
As the Nets prepare for the upcoming season, the team aims to bounce back from a 26-56 record and another missed playoff berth. Porter’s integration into the lineup, combined with Thomas’s development, could be pivotal for Brooklyn’s success.
With Porter and Fernandez’s established rapport, the Nets are poised for a transformative season. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as they look to redefine their identity in a highly competitive Eastern Conference.
