UPDATE: A Texas A&M fraternity has been suspended amid serious hazing allegations that have sparked an urgent investigation by the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office. The inquiry, announced today, follows reports of a disturbing incident involving the Kappa Sigma fraternity that occurred on September 14, 2023.
The sheriff’s office confirmed it was alerted to the situation on Sunday and is now actively pursuing details from potential victims and witnesses. According to initial reports, new fraternity members, referred to as pledges, were instructed to attend an off-campus event where they were allegedly subjected to extreme physical exertion. One pledge reportedly required medical attention for injuries sustained during this grueling ordeal.
A victim, who spoke to KPRC, described the event as an “almost torturous” workout involving squats and physical drills under duress. “You have to put your hands on your heels and squat all as a group,” the victim recounted. “You’re getting dizzy, you’re throwing up.” There are allegations that some pledges collapsed during the activities, with reports of multiple hospitalizations following the event.
Following the incident, several pledges claimed they could not walk and reported concerning symptoms, including dark urine—potentially indicative of rhabdomyolysis, a serious muscle condition. Officials have not yet confirmed these diagnoses. “If nothing changes, someone’s gonna die,” the victim warned, emphasizing the urgent need for reform within fraternity practices.
In response to the allegations, Bradley Bailey, executive director of Kappa Sigma, stated, “Any member found to violate the Fraternity’s Code of Conduct, which strictly forbids hazing, will be held accountable.” Kappa Sigma’s Texas A&M chapter remains suspended while the investigation unfolds.
Authorities are appealing for anyone with additional information on the incident to come forward. This investigation highlights ongoing concerns about hazing practices in fraternities and the potential for life-threatening consequences.
As developments continue to emerge, the community watches closely, hoping this incident will lead to significant changes in fraternity culture at universities across the nation. Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
