UPDATE: In a stunning upset, the Cabrillo College men’s soccer team dominated No. 1 state-ranked Feather River College, winning 4-1 in a nonconference match held in Aptos on October 16, 2023. This victory marks a significant turnaround for the Seahawks, who have struggled early in the season.
Sophomore forward Yoan Ponio led the charge, scoring two goals and providing one assist. This performance not only signifies his first points of the season but also highlights his recent selection to the 2024 North All-Region Team. “This feels good for the kids,” said Seahawks coach Paolo Carbone.
Cabrillo’s offense was bolstered by contributions from Alex Castro-Neri, who scored and assisted another goal, and Adam Anaimi, who added to the scoreline. The team showcased their potential, bouncing back from a challenging start with a record of 2-3-1.
Carbone emphasized that the Seahawks’ record does not reflect their true capabilities, noting that they suffered three one-goal defeats and had a draw against the No. 7 Fresno City. “Our record doesn’t show the strength of our team,” he remarked, underlining the resilience of his players.
Despite Feather River’s strong season (now 7-2-0), their lone goal came from an own goal by Cabrillo, reflecting the Seahawks’ defensive efforts. Goalkeeper Bryan Bravo Martinez made six crucial saves, even as Cabrillo played the final 17 minutes with ten players after Noah Moles Licata received a red card in the 73rd minute.
The Seahawks are gaining momentum and will look to capitalize on this victory as they prepare for their next challenge against Monterey Peninsula on Friday at 2 p.m..
In women’s soccer, the Cabrillo Seahawks also celebrated a win, defeating Feather River 3-0. Goals from Anely Flores, Yamilet Madueno, and Isela Gonzalez in the first half secured the victory. Goalkeeper Alessandra Zuniga contributed to the clean sheet before teammate Giselle Santillan took over, solidifying the Seahawks’ record at 3-4-0.
With both teams achieving significant victories, Cabrillo College looks poised to make a mark in their upcoming matches. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for further updates as the season progresses.
