A new mother in Salt Lake City, Emily Hausman, received a devastating diagnosis of metastatic melanoma just months after welcoming her first child. The diagnosis has profoundly affected her life, but Hausman has experienced an outpouring of support from her community that she describes as “overwhelming in the most beautiful way.”
Hausman relocated to Utah shortly before her child’s birth to be closer to family after losing her job during her pregnancy. The news of her cancer diagnosis came as a shock during what should have been a joyful time. “It’s not great when you look it up, so it was just very overwhelming,” she shared, noting that her primary concern has been ensuring her child’s well-being.
In the wake of her diagnosis, Hausman turned to her friend Leia Bell for support. Bell helped establish a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for Hausman’s medical expenses and to spread awareness of her situation. “We were really excited to find out that Emily was having a baby, and then just two months in, she got this diagnosis, which was completely devastating,” Bell remarked. She felt compelled to take action, stating, “As her friend, I felt like it was my duty to set something like that up.”
Hausman has also utilized social media to share her journey, creating a TikTok profile to reach a wider audience. This platform has allowed her to connect with people globally, fostering a sense of community as others share their stories and advice.
Community Response and Personal Advocacy
The support Hausman has received has not only come from friends but also from strangers around the world. “I tend to be the type of person who just… I’ll shoulder this myself,” Hausman explained. However, she found that sharing her experiences and asking for help has been a huge relief, enabling her to focus more on motherhood.
Bell noted the heartwarming nature of the community’s response, emphasizing the kindness of strangers who are willing to support someone in need. “It just restores your faith in humanity that so many people care,” she remarked.
Hausman believes in the importance of self-advocacy, particularly when facing health challenges. “If something doesn’t seem right, go to the doctor, check it out,” she advised. She encourages others going through similar situations to accept offers of help, noting that many well-intentioned people often ask, “If you need anything, let me know.”
Bell added that being present for loved ones during difficult times can be incredibly beneficial. “Most important is just to be willing to listen to everything they have to say,” she explained, underscoring the value of emotional support.
As Hausman continues her fight against cancer, she remains focused on her family and the love that surrounds her. Her journey is a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the impact of community support during challenging times.
