The SCAD Savannah Film Festival has announced that Academy Award-winning production designer Hannah Beachler will be honored with the inaugural Creative Impact in Production Design Award. This recognition is set to take place on October 28, 2025, during the festival, which runs from October 25 to November 1 in Savannah, Georgia.
Honoring a Trailblazer in Production Design
Beachler is celebrated for her groundbreaking work on the film Black Panther, for which she became the first African American to win an Academy Award in the production design category. Her innovative designs have also been pivotal in films directed by Ryan Coogler, including Fruitvale Station, Creed, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
In her latest project, Sinners, Beachler’s artistic vision is highlighted through her creation of an authentic juke joint setting and the evocative landscapes of the Mississippi Delta. Christina Routhier, senior executive director of the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, emphasized the significance of Beachler’s contributions, stating, “Her work roots the film in authenticity while elevating the story into something otherworldly.”
“For our SCAD students in production design and film and television, her artistry is an inspiring example of bold, innovative world-building,” Routhier added, expressing excitement over the upcoming celebration of Beachler’s achievements in filmmaking.
Engaging Future Filmmakers
Variety senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay also expressed enthusiasm about the award and Beachler’s influence in the industry. “The Creative Impact Award celebrates someone who has made an impact in their field, and Hannah’s work has done just that,” Tangcay noted. She highlighted the educational opportunity for SCAD students, stating, “Hearing her talk about her process and research is going to be such a gift for the students at SCAD.”
Beachler’s award presentation coincides with the “10 Artisans to Watch” panel, moderated by Tangcay, which will further explore the creative processes behind successful films. This year marks the first time the Creative Impact in Production Design Award is being presented, making the event particularly special.
In addition to Beachler, the festival will honor Jon M. Chu with the Vanguard Director Award and Jennifer Lopez with the Virtuoso Award. The festival aims to showcase a range of talent and creativity within the film industry, culminating in a week of engaging events and discussions.
Festival passes for the 2025 SCAD Savannah Film Festival are currently available, with individual event tickets going on sale on October 3. The festival promises an exciting lineup for film enthusiasts and aspiring filmmakers alike.
