Brewers’ Quintana Hits IL; Megill’s Playoff Return in Doubt

BREAKING: The Milwaukee Brewers are dealing with a significant setback as pitcher Jose Quintana has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left calf strain, just as the playoffs loom. This urgent development was confirmed on Wednesday, following an injury sustained during the fourth inning of Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Quintana, who has been vying for a spot in the postseason rotation, suffered the injury while sprinting to cover first base. He managed to record the final out of the inning but appeared to be limping upon returning to the dugout. He was later seen leaving American Family Field in a walking boot en route for an MRI.

In response to Quintana’s injury, the Brewers have reinstated right-handed reliever Nick Mears from the injured list to fill the gap. This is particularly critical as the team prepares for the postseason.

Meanwhile, there is growing concern surrounding All-Star closer Trevor Megill, who has been sidelined since August 27 with a right flexor strain. Initially thought to be a minor issue, Megill’s recovery has not progressed as hoped. Manager Pat Murphy revealed that Megill was scheduled to play catch before Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, but his throwing sessions have been disappointing.

Murphy stated,

“Nothing great. It was not revealing but he didn’t want to push it anymore.”

The uncertainty surrounding Megill’s return leaves the Brewers anxious as they aim to secure his arm before the playoffs commence.

Murphy added,

“We all want him to pitch before the postseason,”

but noted that Megill’s health is paramount:

“It’s got to have some time to heal. Unfortunately, we don’t have that time.”

On a brighter note, pitcher Robert Gasser, who underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2024, made strides with a successful outing for Triple-A Nashville, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Murphy expressed optimism, stating,

“I think you’ll see him soon,”

as Gasser could be a valuable asset in a multi-inning role.

Additionally, right-hander Chad Patrick, who was called up from Nashville on September 9, impressed by striking out the side in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game. Murphy noted,

“Chad Patrick threw the ball good last night, that’s encouraging.”

As the Brewers navigate this critical period with just days remaining in the regular season, fans are left wondering how these injuries will affect their postseason aspirations. The team is working diligently to ensure they remain competitive, but the clock is ticking.

Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
