Brian Snowden, a freshman quarterback at Archbishop Spalding, has quickly made a name for himself after stepping into the starting role earlier than anticipated. Known as “LB” for “Little Brian,” Snowden took the helm during the Cavaliers’ home opener against Archbishop Hoban on August 30, 2023. He delivered an impressive performance, throwing five touchdown passes and guiding his team to a remarkable 58-28 victory over the then-No. 2 high school football team in Ohio.
Snowden’s debut eased concerns among Spalding supporters and coaching staff about his readiness to replace the highly regarded Malik Washington, who led the team for three years. Further solidifying his position, the previous starter, Blake Howell, transferred to Severna Park shortly after the season began. Since taking over, Snowden has led the Cavaliers to a series of victories, including a 35-28 win against the Hun School of New Jersey and a commanding 35-13 triumph over McDonogh on September 12, extending the team’s winning streak to 27 games against Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference opponents.
As of now, Snowden boasts impressive statistics with 47 completions for 678 yards and 10 touchdowns, along with 13 carries for 11 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He is preparing for an upcoming match against Calvert Hall, where he hopes to continue his successful run.
Early Life and Football Journey
Snowden’s football journey began in the Annapolis area, where he started playing at the age of six. Initially a running back and wide receiver, he transitioned to quarterback during his youth football days. “It was between me and my friend, because they had no quarterback at Brooklyn Park [Broncos youth football],” Snowden recalled. He embraced the challenge, recognizing that being a quarterback demanded a greater level of responsibility.
The pressure of continuing the legacy left by Washington was palpable. “People have been talking to me about it since youth,” he said. He was determined to make his mark at Spalding, having only applied to this school and prepared to step into the spotlight. Washington’s advice on hard work and preparation resonated with him throughout the transition.
Performance Under Pressure
Snowden’s debut performance was nothing short of spectacular, leaving him pleasantly surprised. “I thought I would play well, but when I did my first touchdown, I just felt like—dang,” he shared. The success he experienced in his first game against Hoban was a testament to his preparation and ability to rise to the occasion.
Adjusting to the role of a starting quarterback in high school football came with its challenges, especially when interacting with older teammates. “When I found out I was starting, I was kind of nervous,” he admitted. However, once he took the field, he felt prepared and confident. Establishing rapport with senior teammates during summer workouts helped ease his nerves, as they bonded over shared experiences.
Snowden’s style of play combines both passing and running, making him a dual threat on the field. “It’s hard to guard both. That’s why I think my best ability is reading a field,” he explained. He noted that while Washington preferred to run less, he enjoys using his legs to create opportunities.
As he continues to build on his early success, Snowden has set personal goals for the season, including avoiding interceptions and leading his team to a championship. “Winning the championship this year, that’s my real personal goal,” he stated, expressing determination to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors.
With a promising start to his high school football career, Brian Snowden is poised to make significant contributions to Archbishop Spalding football, and fans eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for the young quarterback.
