Ravens CB Jaire Alexander Out; Rookie Reuben Lowery to Debut

The Baltimore Ravens will face the Cleveland Browns without cornerback Jaire Alexander for their home opener on September 24, 2023. After a challenging performance in last week’s narrow 41-40 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the two-time Pro Bowl selection has been deemed inactive. Alexander’s struggles were largely attributed to his limited preparation, as he returned to practice just days before the game following a three-week absence due to a knee injury.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh emphasized the importance of practice for players in Alexander’s position. “Practice is important, especially at that position, just being exactly right,” he stated during the week. Harbaugh expressed his belief in Alexander’s potential, noting, “He’s healthy enough, but we have to get him right so we can go out there and play like Jaire Alexander, which I fully expect him to do.”

Over the last two seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Alexander faced significant injury challenges, participating in only 16 games. These injuries included issues with his knee, quadriceps, back, and shoulder.

With Alexander inactive, rookie free agent safety Reuben Lowery is set to make his NFL debut. Lowery, who went undrafted, previously played at Tennessee-Chattanooga and showed promise during training camp, frequently making impactful plays. He was a healthy scratch last week but has now earned a spot on the 53-man roster.

The Ravens’ list of inactive players also includes running back Keaton Mitchell, outside linebacker David Ojabo, and rookie offensive tackle Carson Vinson, all of whom were expected to be sidelined. Additionally, fullback Patrick Ricard (calf) and tight end Isaiah Likely (foot) were ruled out on Friday.

On the other side, the Browns will also be missing key players. Starting right tackle Jack Conklin has been ruled inactive due to an eye and elbow injury, following a questionable status leading up to the game. Other inactive players for the Browns include rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, running back Raheim Sanders, defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., and guard Zac Zinter.

As both teams prepare for the highly anticipated matchup, the absence of Alexander and the debut of Lowery highlight the evolving dynamics on the field. Fans will be keen to see how these changes affect the Ravens’ performance against their division rivals.
