A family in Virginia is sounding the alarm about the risks associated with kratom, a substance they believe poses a serious danger to young people. This warning stems from the personal experience of Cameron Francis, who, at 22, turned to kratom while seeking an alternative to alcohol.
Francis, a former athlete at Liberty University, encountered kratom while searching for a way to feel more social at gatherings. Despite his commitment to athletics, he occasionally consumed alcohol with friends. However, his girlfriend’s disapproval of drinking prompted him to explore kratom as a substitute. “And that’s where I came across kratom,” Francis explained in an interview with The Epoch Times.
This tropical evergreen plant, native to Southeast Asia, has gained popularity for its opioid-like effects. Initially touted as a harmless alternative to traditional substances, many users, including Francis, have since recognized its potential for addiction and adverse effects. Eight years after his first exposure, he regrets his decision to try kratom.
As concerns over kratom’s safety grow, the family of Francis is determined to raise awareness about its presence in corner stores, often marketed as a legal high. They argue that the substance can be deceptively packaged and marketed, making it appear innocuous to unsuspecting individuals, particularly young adults and teenagers.
Regulatory bodies in various countries have begun to scrutinize kratom, with some jurisdictions considering bans due to health risks. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has classified kratom as a “drug of concern,” highlighting its potential for abuse and dependence. Users can experience side effects ranging from nausea and dizziness to more severe complications, including respiratory issues.
The family believes that more education is needed to inform the public about kratom and its potential dangers. “Many people think it’s just a harmless herb, but it is not,” Francis emphasized. Their efforts include speaking to local schools and community organizations to share their story and urge others to consider the risks before trying kratom.
In light of rising incidents related to substance misuse among youths, the Francis family’s warning serves as a critical reminder of the importance of awareness regarding emerging substances like kratom. By sharing their experience, they hope to prevent others from facing similar challenges and to encourage more stringent regulations on the sale and distribution of this substance.
