BREAKING: The Benicia Unified School District (BUSD) has just appointed Chris Calabrese as its new superintendent, effective September 17, 2023. This unanimous decision by the board last Thursday marks a significant leadership transition for the district.
Calabrese, a seasoned educator with 31 years of experience, is committed to fostering an open-door policy, emphasizing his intention to “listen first, and learn deeply.” His immediate plan for the first 100 days involves an immersive approach—connecting directly with the district community in classrooms and offices.
“I want to learn the heartbeat of our district,” Calabrese stated, “and the best way for me to do that is to be in the offices, to be in classrooms.”
Already engaged in local back-to-school events, Calabrese is set to attend the Back to School Night at Benicia Middle School this Thursday, further demonstrating his commitment to community involvement.
BUSD Board President CeCe Grubbs praised Calabrese’s extensive background, highlighting that his multifaceted roles—from preschool educator to assistant superintendent at the Brentwood Union School District—position him as a perfect fit for the growing district.
The board’s search for a new superintendent began in late spring after former Superintendent Damon Wright accepted a role with the Santa Clara Unified School District. Following a thorough evaluation process, Calabrese emerged as the standout candidate, earning positive feedback from community members and administrative peers.
In a statement, Grubbs emphasized, “His unique and well-rounded perspective is a great match for our District.”
To introduce Calabrese to the community, BUSD will host an official meet-and-greet on September 23, 2023, in the BUSD Boardroom from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m..
With excitement for what lies ahead, Calabrese remarked, “Benicia has some great things happening… I just want to build upon that.” His appointment is expected to bring fresh energy and vision to the district, making this a pivotal moment for students, staff, and the community.
Stay tuned for further updates as Calabrese begins his tenure and outlines his initiatives for the Benicia Unified School District.
