A family in Reedley, California, is reeling from the shocking death of a mother, shot and killed by her husband during a domestic violence incident. The tragedy unfolded over the weekend when police reported that Michael Rocha, aged 43, fatally shot his wife, Yesennia Rocha, also 43, in front of their two adult children.
In a heartfelt tribute, their daughter, Kayla Rocha, described her mother as “the light of our world.” She expressed her profound sorrow, stating, “She shined very bright. She was always there for me and my brother. She was everything to us.” Her brother, Jacob Rocha, echoed these sentiments, wishing for one last opportunity to embrace his mother, saying, “That man took everything away from us.”
Following the shooting, Michael Rocha fled the scene but was tracked down by authorities later that day. During an encounter with law enforcement, a gun battle ensued, resulting in Michael being shot and killed by deputies, as confirmed by Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux.
The couple had a long history together, having started their relationship in middle school and being married for 25 years. However, they had been separated for the past two months, a situation that Michael’s mother, Rita Rocha, believes he could not cope with. “He didn’t want to live without his sweetheart. He chose the cowardly way out,” she said, visibly distraught.
Michael and Yesennia leave behind their two children, who are now grappling with the loss of their mother and the circumstances surrounding her death. Jacob reflected on the future memories that will never be, expressing regret about not being able to share milestones with his mother. “To be a grandmother to mine and my sister’s kids, unfortunately, I’ll never get that, and he took that away from us,” he lamented.
In their time of grief, the Rocha family is leaning on their community for support. They have established a GoFundMe page to assist with expenses during this difficult period. “I do find the littlest peace knowing that she is resting in a better place,” Jacob added, sharing how he finds comfort in remembering his mother in everyday moments, like beautiful days and Christian worship songs.
As the family navigates this heartbreaking situation, they urge anyone who is experiencing or knows someone who is facing domestic violence to seek help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers resources and support 24/7 at (800) 799-7233.
