UPDATE: In a stunning display of skill, Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman struck out four batters in a single inning during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. At 37, Chapman is redefining his career, showcasing one of the most dominant runs for a relief pitcher in baseball history.
Chapman, who recently signed a $13.3 million contract for the 2026 season, is having a “special” year. He has not allowed a hit in his last 17 appearances, spanning 14 and 2/3 innings since July 26, marking the third-longest streak in MLB history. Only Randy Choate and Tim Byrdak have had longer streaks since 1901.
“This is special,” exclaimed Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who also celebrated his 600th career win during the game. “To do it at this age and where we’re at as an industry, as far as the hitters and the adjustments they make, it’s unreal.”
In an impressive feat, Chapman has allowed just one earned run in his past 37 games, with a solo homer from J.T. Realmuto of the Philadelphia Phillies being the only blemish on his record since July 23. He retired 21 consecutive batters before a wild pitch allowed Arizona’s Ildemaro Vargas to first base. Chapman then closed out his 29th save by striking out Jordan Lawlar, becoming the second pitcher this season to record four strikeouts in one inning, joining Steven Matz of the St. Louis Cardinals.
With his latest performance, Chapman lowered his ERA to an astonishing 0.98. “He’s so nasty, and showing people he can still do a lot of great things,” said Red Sox starter Brayan Bello.
Chapman is celebrated for his ability to consistently hit over 100 mph on the radar gun throughout his 16-year career. He holds records for eight of the nine fastest pitches in baseball history, including the 105.8 mph pitch during his rookie season in 2010, the fastest ever recorded in MLB.
“It’s just something that happened,” Chapman stated through an interpreter. “My mentality is to go get three outs and go for a strikeout.”
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Chapman, who continues to defy expectations and set records. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this remarkable run will unfold in the coming games. Keep following for more updates on Chapman’s historic season.
