Maine Children Face Year-Long Dental Wait as Care Lags

PORTLAND, ME – AUGUST 14: Mike Dowling, a pediatric dentist in Yarmouth, flips through through book he made showing examples of some of his young patients on MaineCare at his office on Wednesday, August 14, 2025. Dowling, who treats many children on MaineCare, said there is a year-long wait list for patients who need general anesthesia. If MaineCare upped the reimbursement for the anesthesiology Dowling said they would be able to cut the wait time significantly. “There are kids right now who are living with a mouth full of abscessed teeth,” Dowling said. Children in Maine are experiencing significant delays in accessing essential dental care, particularly for those requiring general anesthesia. According to pediatric dentist Mike Dowling, who serves many patients on MaineCare, there is currently a year-long waitlist for these critical services. This situation raises urgent questions about the adequacy of funding and reimbursement rates for anesthesiology under the state’s Medicaid program.

On August 14, 2025, Dowling highlighted the severe impact of these delays while showcasing a collection of photographs of his young patients at his practice in Yarmouth, Maine. The pediatric dentist expressed concern for those children suffering from dental issues, stating, “There are kids right now who are living with a mouth full of abscessed teeth.” This statement underscores the pressing need for immediate action to address the backlog in care.

The increasing calls for an adjustment in the reimbursement rates by the Department of Health and Human Services are gaining momentum. Dowling suggests that if the reimbursement for anesthesiology were to be increased, the wait times for children in need of dental procedures would be significantly reduced.

The ongoing delays in dental care for children on MaineCare reflect broader challenges within the healthcare system, particularly concerning funding for critical services. With many children awaiting treatment, the urgency for reforms in reimbursement structures has never been clearer. The ability to provide timely dental care is vital not only for the health of these children but also for their overall quality of life.

As the situation continues to develop, stakeholders are encouraged to advocate for changes that prioritize the health and well-being of Maine’s children. The hope is that with increased funding and support, dental professionals can provide the necessary care without the lengthy wait times currently faced by many families.
