UPDATE: Russia has just launched its largest aerial assault in the ongoing war against Ukraine, deploying over 800 drones early Sunday morning. In a shocking development, a government building in Kyiv was struck for the first time, claiming the lives of at least two individuals, including an infant.
The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Moscow’s forces unleashed a total of 810 drones, along with four ballistic missiles and nine cruise missiles. While air defense systems intercepted many of these, 54 drones and nine missiles successfully hit targets across Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in hostilities since the war began in February 2022.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described the attack as “massive,” emphasizing that multiple cities, including Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, and Odesa, were also under siege. Notably, the building housing the prime minister’s office in Kyiv suffered damage to its roof and upper floors. “Rescuers are extinguishing the fire. I thank them for their work,” Svyrydenko stated.
Tragically, in the Sviatoshynskyi district of Kyiv, rescuers recovered the body of an infant buried beneath the rubble of a residential building. Reports indicate that the child was under one year old. Additionally, a young woman also lost her life in the drone strikes. The nine-floor apartment complex in Sviatoshynskyi was severely damaged, with four floors partially destroyed, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Klitschko further reported that debris from the strikes hit a 16-story residential building, igniting fires on the 15th and 16th floors. The damage extended to two additional multistory apartment blocks in the same district and another building in eastern Darnytskyi. In total, at least 18 people were wounded during this unprecedented attack, described by Ukraine’s State Emergency Services as a catastrophic event.
Visuals released by the emergency service show extensive damage to buildings, with large holes punctuating their sides and firefighters battling blazes at the scene. This attack is a grim reminder of the ongoing threat civilians face amid the conflict.
Earlier today, in response to the escalating threats, Polish and allied aircraft were activated to secure Polish airspace due to the proximity of Russian attacks near the border. Poland’s operational command stated, “Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness.”
